Happy birthday to our Meghan! Queen of the educational workshops. First of her name. Lady of the "Floating Classroom". The unsunburnt. Breaker of barge line, and mother of barge dogs. (If you know, you know). #GoT ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We're glad to have you on board!
Memphis, you've been fun. We'll be back next March for our 2020 Alternative Spring Break, if not sooner! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There's still a lot of cleaning up to do! If you're in Memphis and looking to help out in your community, definitely holler at our friends over there making big environmental impacts year-round: Wolf River Conservancy (@wolfriverconservancy), Clean Memphis (@clean_memphis), Sierra Club-Chickasaw Group (@sierrasocialreach), Tennessee Valley Authority (@tva) & more!
A handful of the crew is out on the barge in Memphis, and in just a few days we managed to pick up over 6,000 pounds of garbage! (In between taking care of some equipment maintenance projects!) It does not take much time to make a positive impact. #keepitclean
May is Illinois Invasive Species Awareness month! We cannot stress enough how important it is to be familiar with invasive species in your area, and to work to remove them. It does not take long for most of these aggressive plants to take over, and harm, native plants and animals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here we have Dan, our Invasive Species Removal program coordinator, with a massive branch of honeysuckle. He coordinates programs in Illinois throughout the spring to work to restore the natural environment. Send us a message if you’d like to learn more or get involved! #invasivespecies #naturalillinois
Happy Arbor Day! Most know that trees are vital for producing oxygen and cleaning carbon dioxide out of the air. But did you know that they also prevent erosion, improve water quality and provide homes for a variety of animal species? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our MillionTrees Project is aiding #reforestation by harvesting, distributing and planting native trees across the country each year. This year, we gave away a total of 103,977 tree saplings! Happy planting! 🌳🌏 A million thanks to Dreaming Tree Wines and One Tree Planted for making it possible for the #MillionTreesProject to flourish and conquer! #arborday #plantatree
Earth Day every day. We agree with that philosophy but, on this special holiday, let’s remind ourselves, our friends and our families how important it is to take responsibility for our earth! Small, simple actions that protect and preserve our planet are beneficial for all. And they make a difference! Thank you for doing your part to keep our rivers, oceans, streams, ponds and puddles clean each and every day! #earthday #keepitclean
Chad Pregracke stopping in to simply say, "Don't Litter!"
New year, new followers. Allow us to (re)introduce ourselves! You didn't think we would leave out our part-time seasonal squad, did you? Let's give it up for the crew who comes in and saves the day whenever we're in over our heads! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Meet Eric (better known as Yam)! It was the dawn of time when Yam joined the crew (aka the very early 2000's). He brings numerous valuable assets such as great jokes, many laughs, a calm demeanor in any given situation, wonderful photography and great cooking. Yam is always trying to pick up the slack and will not say no when asked to help, unless the Coach is asking for help in which case Yam is probably too busy. Yam resides in Iowa with his wife Lisa, who he met on the barge, and their son Charlie (better known as Sweet Potato). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Meet Becky! Becky started working with us a few years back during the creation of Chad's "Message in a Bottle" exhibit. Being the spectacular craftswoman that she is, Becky built custom shadow boxes for each message out of painted wood collected at our many river cleanups. Becky is a master carver, whittler, painter, wood worker...we could go on. She has been a huge help and great addition during the spring when we are deep in the midst of our Alternative Spring Break and MillionTrees Project. When Becky isn't slinging garbage with the crew you'll find her making and selling jewelry (@renascentwood), commercial fishing, working at a girl's camp or on some other great adventure! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Meet Andrew! You know him, you love him, and you probably refer to him as The Ref! Andrew started helping out about four years back and we try to have him around as much as humanly possible. Being the nicest guy on planet Earth, Andrew never ceases to lend a hand or hand out a compliment. He's a real morale booster and great for keeping The Coach in line. When he's not with the crew, Andrew works for his uncle's concrete business. In his free time, Andrew enjoys spending time with his wife, Casey, and little baby Virginia, as well as kickin' it in the great outdoors at his favorite farm.
We're heading back to the Ohio River for our 4th annual Ohio River Tour. In 2018, we brought our fleet of barges to 14 different towns and were able to pick up over 327,500 pounds of garbage in just a few months! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Help us make 2019 bigger and better! Click the link in our bio to see what towns we're heading to and when we'll be there. And of course to get yourself signed up for a cleanup! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Help us reach our goal of removing one million pounds in one year! #keepitclean
On April 12, some decades ago, the world’s greatest rivalry was born. The Coach vs. The Ref. These guys definitely keep the friendly competition rolling on the crew. We’re not sure of any other duo who gets more fired up over garbage than these two. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Happy birthday, Mike (Coach) & Andrew (Ref)! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Team Coach or Team Ref? Comment below!
New year, new followers. Allow us to (re)introduce ourselves! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Meet Matt: Director of Partnerships. Matt Brinkmann joined us in May of 2018 to oversee fundraising activities and grant writing and explore other opportunities for partnership with companies and organizations. With a background in development, event management, tourism and the arts, he works from his home in St. Louis, where he’s been active in local efforts to revitalize the riverfront and renew interest in the Mississippi River as an asset to the city. Matt has also jumped in this spring to help coordinate our MillionTrees Project. Not an easy project to dive into, but he handles new challenges with ease! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Prior to joining LL&W, Matt worked with the Gateway Arch Park Foundation, Great Rivers Greenway, the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission and the Saint Louis Science Center. And, in the local music scene, he is best known as a retired longtime founding member of the legendary Funky Butt Brass Band! In his free time, Matt enjoys hiking & biking with his amazing wife Beth, as well as exploring all of the great sights & sounds of their hometown of St. Louis. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Contact him at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’re interested in exploring any kind of partnership between your organization and ours!
Let's hear it for Miss Allbaugh's 2nd grade class at Riverdale Heights Elementary, who put together a coin drive after learning about the problem and effects of water pollution. Through their drive, they raised over $1,000 and donated it to us! Thanks, everyone, we'll make sure to put it to very good use. 🌏 #kidsrock
Aaaaand that's a WRAP for Cedar 5's 2019 round of the #MillionTreesProject ! #AmeriCorpsNCCC visited their last school, Rivermont Collegiate, last Friday where the students cruuuuushed it and finished the last 60% of trees that needed to be individually wrapped. A big THANK YOU to all of the schools that participated. We could not have done it without you! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The AmeriCorps NCCC members finished out their time with us via tree delivery assistance and invasive species removal along I-80. They departed the Quad Cities Thursday morning to head to their next venture. We wish them the best and thank them immensely for their hard work! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #GetThingsDone #BeTheGreaterGood #LivingLandsAndWaters
New year, new us. Allow us to (re)introduce ourselves! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ New crew member alert! It's time to meet Brady! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Brady Harris hails from Paducah, Kentucky and working on the river runs in his blood. In addition to working full time with us, he's a full-time college student studying logistics and operations management through Murray State University. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Brady likes his music loud and his donuts at room temperature. He enjoys playing guitar and keyboard and his ultimate dream is bringing these two loves together to become the most savage key-tar player to ever live! When being a little more low key (sorry, we had to), Brady is a Tame Impala superfan and a die-hard GoT Thronie. He's actually considering getting a back tattoo of his favorite character, Tyrion Lannister, playing the key-tar while flying on one of the dragon's backs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In conclusion, Brady is a ray of sunshine even on the cloudiest of days and ladies, don't take offense when he refers to you as "ma'am," that's just his southern gentlemanliness coming out!
