Sulla sommità del Monte Nemrut si trova la tomba-santuario del Re Antioco I di Commagene (costruita probabilmente nel 62 a.C.) che è costituita da un tumulo di pietra frantumata a forma piramidale, alto 50 metri, con alla base tre terrazze. Sulla terrazza di ovest sono collocate 5 grandi statue, alte 9 metri, che rappresentano: il Re Antioco I, Zeus, Apollo/Mithra, la dea Tyche ed Eracle; alle loro estremità troviamo l’aquila ed il leone che erano simboli di regalità connessi con la dinastia di Commagene. A causa di fulmini, terremoti e del trascorrere del tempo, le statue sono state decapitate e le loro teste sono state disposte intorno al tumulo. Il sito archeologico è uno dei più affascinanti al mondo ed è stato dichiarato, nel 1987, patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO. Durante l' alba ed il tramonto è possibile assistere ad uno scenario suggestivo; infatti, in queste ore della giornata, i raggi solari colpiscono la superficie delle statue colorandole con sfumature arancio e rosate.

On the top of Mount Nemrut is the tomb-sanctuary of King Antiochus I of Commagene (probably built in 62 BC) which consisting of a pyramid-shaped stone mound, 50 meters high, with three terraces at its base. On the west terrace there are 5 large statues, 9 meters high, which represent: King Antiochus I, Zeus, Apollo/Mithra, the goddess Tyche and Heracles; at their ends we find the eagle and the lion which were symbols of royalty associated with the Commagene dynasty. Because of lightning, earthquakes and the passage of time, the statues have been beheaded and their heads have been placed around the mound. The archaeological site is one of the most fascinating in the world and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. During sunrise and sunset it is possible to see a suggestive scenery; in fact, in these hours of the day, the sun's rays strike the surface of the statues, coloring them with orange and pink hues.
