Gereja Ayam (Chicken Church): The building was erected during the 1990s by Daniel Alamsjah, who claimed to have been inspired by God to build a prayer house through a dream he had in 1989. Alamsjah is Christian, but envisioned Gereja Ayam as a place to welcome followers of any religion for prayer or meditation. Due to financial difficulties and local resistance, the construction was never finished. The construction was halted in 2000 and the building has since largely been left to deteriorate. In spite of this, in recent years the place has become reasonably frequented by tourists, as well as by couples seeking either to take wedding photographs or to be wed in the building. Besides serving in a religious capacity, the building has also been used to rehabilitate handicapped children or drug addicts, or as an insane asylum. Kolkata’s Hand-Pulled Rickshaws are British Heritage in India’s Colonial Treasure . Kolkata is a rare mélange of the past and the present, which never fails to enchant artists, poets, writers, filmmakers, photographers and tourists. . In Kolkata, a rickshawwallah’s day starts early in the morning at 5 o’clock and ends by late in the evening through a schedule of strenuous labor at daytime. They deliver goods from one place to the other, carry children to schools and take them back to homes, and carry women to nearby local markets. After a short rest in the afternoon, they continue plying the streets and lanes of north and central Kolkata till late evening. . I don't encourage such manual labor but if you don't support them, you are actually leaving them to starve. And most importantly, you trip to Kolkata is incomplete without a small ride on these ethnic rikshaws ... . .
