So have to be home and so thankful for @stuartmcalister_ who took time off work to come with me on the 500 mile round trip to the peristomal dermatologist. If it wasn’t for him I’d never have had such a successful trip. We spent most of the time driving but just being with Stuart totally puts me at ease so it was a much more relaxed time and the hotel was great to chill in because we were both shattered! I don’t think either of us have ever slept so deeply (apart from 2 pretty bag bag leaks that woke us up through the night)! We even managed to squeeze in a trip to the outlets and I felt like I’d spent far too much money in Kate Spade but after the hospital I think I earned my new bag... or at least I’m going to tell myself that. The hospital was far different than I expected, the peristomal dermatologist is amazing and a wonderful doctor but I ended up completely embarrassing myself for the second time in a week and I burst out crying while talking about everything going on. Thankfully he didn’t act really awkward because there was a solid 45 minutes of tears because once I started I couldn’t stop. He basically took a look at my skin and said that alongside dermatitis that the output from my stoma has enzymes in it and those enzymes have completely digested the skin for a good 2/3 centimetres around my stoma. This was caused because my stoma is too short and after I healed from my collectomy it retracted quite a bit into my skin as my muscle is so tight and I needed Botox into the muscle to try and let the ostomy have more room to fill the bag. So I ended up getting that done while we were there along side a procedure to remove a large lump of tissue that formed in the fleshy part and cauterise the area. That was an awful experience as I have such a hypersensitive abdomen though so I definitely think I’ll avoid that in the future which isn’t great because it needs to be done between every 1-3 months as the Botox wears off. The other option is a total refashion of my stoma to make it longer which I think will be my best long term solution so I’m adding it to my list of surgeries. Yikes! But now I have a couple of days before my gynae appointment to chill!
