So why do I travel? What makes these new subjects so intriguing to me? I spend most of my days with “usual suspect birds” which means I know them them extremely well. I know where they roost, eat, swim, fly in from ... they know me. This makes for some very intimate photography as there is a pre-determined relationship between us. With these new once in a lifetime subjects - I might be granted 45 seconds of time for this one time encounter- a fleeting moment in time.... I may never see these beautiful little birds again but these brief moments stay with me, we have passing fleeting moments but they ignite the flame to stay passionate about my daily usual suspects and I always come back to them.... I’m happy to share what I was able to to rescue from my photography shot in Brazil - each bird a memory that stays with me and us a living souvenir of the beautiful country I was able to know as well.... 💙 Many species of Thraupis tanagers are widely-distributed, but the Azure-shouldered Tanager occurs only in the Atlantic forest region of southeastern Brazil, from Espírito Santo south to Rio Grande do Sul. Its distribution overlaps that of the Sayaca Tanager (Thraupis sayaca), but the Azure-shouldered Tanager is larger with a heavier bill, has deep blue wing coverts, and a buffy belly. The Azure-shouldered Tanager forages in humid forest, at forest edge, and in adjacent second growth, but in general it is more closely associated with forest than is the Sayaca Tanager. The diet of the Azure-shouldered Tanager includes both fruit and arthropods.
