Stop. Wait a minute. You're here, trying to contain what's eating you inside. It can be pain, rage, sadness. It can be never-ending thoughts, darkness. And you have no idea how to get rid of this, you don't know how to stop this feeling. So stop, for a moment, close your eyes, think of a place where you feel good, a moment that you liked, something positive. Let it overwhelm you, let it erase all those bad feelings, those negative emotions. Breathe. You felt good at that moment, when fresh air was filling your lungs, when you could only hear birds and your steps on dead leaves. When no one and nothing could get at you, that you were alone and safe. #forest #woods #foret #nature #hike #hiking #walk #walking #randonnee #rando #tree #roots #racines #landscape #paysage #beautiful #picoftheday #instagood #instapic #peaceful #quiet #therapy #winter #mountains #montagnes #path #chemin

Best line up, starring #croixrouge Arbois from adeline Houillon and Sylvain Bruyère. Very clean, and open chardonnay. Almost fruity... but very long on the mouth anyway! Labet comes 2nd! In my last post, I spoke about listening to my inner voice telling me to still go places that I loved despite my friends telling me that they were not interested in the slightest (or, the worst - suddenly dropping off the face of the earth when the time of the event came!). I used to fall victim to this and then experience hardcore FOMO (fear of missing out). I am not perfect, but I have improved on this on many levels! I want to tell you another story from my life. . . . My dating life hasn’t followed a straight path. That is not something that means “stress-free”, but it has definitely injected spices into my life that would not have otherwise been thrown into the mix! 😂🤣😅 . . . My first serious relationship was my first year at university. I became infatuated with a German exchange student. Our time together in school contains memories that shaped me as a person, but my lack of more serious dating experience made me not realize the bleak future ahead of us when she moved back home to Germany. 🇩🇪 . . . So, here I am - hopelessly in love with a woman in Germany. I felt like a lost child, so I did what any lovestruck human would do: I saved up money all year and planned a two-month solo trip to Germany! My mistake was, that was about as far as I planned... . . . My time at @ubishops in Québec involved meeting many exchange students, so I did visit two friends whom I had been in a band with the next school year (they also had to move back home! 😢) and other European friends I had met in Québec. I also did a two-week volunteer program in Kell-Am-See, Germany where I met other lovely international friends! . . . My two months in Europe involved me seeing most of the country of Germany from a car or train, a lot of solo travel, meeting up with a somewhat-distant cousin from England living in Germany, seeing three countries, speaking without English for the first time (after only one year of studying German!), being the only anglophone camping out at a three-day music festival in France, having my passport, wallet, laptop, and train pass stolen at that same festival on the final morning, and lots of time alone to reflect.

Van Halen - Van Halen II . . . What is one word that you could use to describe the content I put out? Let me know after you read this post by writing it in the comments section! Give an explanation if you feel inclined 😏😍😍 . . . . One word that I have for the main featured song in the post is “elegance”. The acoustic song that is the bulk of the video is called “Spanish Fly”. As compared with “Eruption” from the first @vanhalen Van Halen album, @eddievanhalen.official Eddie Van Halen has picked up his acoustic guitar to utilize as the vehicle for showcasing his skills. He just dances across the fretboard. His harmonics and musical phrasing becomes paramount here, as he is telling a story with his fingers. “Eruption” was more just him having fun - this time around he got more serious. . . . This record comes from @retropop.culture Retro Pop Culture in Sherbrooke, Québec. I always find very clean records there that are in good shape. . .
Tricia Foster - Commerciale . . . . . . . .
Sam Lewis - Loversity . . . This is one of those albums where the music better be great, because the cover screams originality! Never before have I seen a legit functioning board game be printed on an album cover! @samlewistunes Sam Lewis’ album Loversity comes from the @magnoliarecordclub Magnolia Record Club in a signed double-disc gatefold cover. It is a new level of creative! . . . . The music is great too! Here is a cut from disc three. Sam Lewis and his band play music steeped in love; love lost, love gained, love made, and love taken. You can also hear their love for playing within the grooves of the discs too. That is the theme of an album named Loversity, in the end. Love is a theme that will never grow old, yet a splash of creative thought will really take it far. Sam Lewis gets my thumbs up for this one! Check it out and let me know what you think about this album below! . . . . .
Illmind - Blap:Cam . . . Inspiration can be found anywhere. Often, the strongest inspiration comes from those in a position that we ourselves desire to attain. In my journey navigating the world using music as my compass, I have found certain figures who rise above the crowd. @illmindproducer Illmind is one of those people, shining a light in the darkness. Ultimately, showing us that it is actually all light, and that we bring the darkness upon ourselves. . . . . I have spent the last chunk of time just getting things done and checked off my To-do list. And yes, I actually do write down and follow a to-do list! It is often my key to maintaining productivity. I am not a one-track man: I uphold and maintain multiple activities and projects at once and I have always lived my life as such. I would say the stem of that is my family not accepting who I am deep inside and always pushing me away from my soul quest. Now I am in a position to truly follow my own path. I have learned that the ego can ascend with us to certain levels, but that the heart and deeper consciousness will elevate that platform to summits that the ego can never fathom. . . . . Blap:Cam is 💯% pure, unadulterated wisdom from a man who spent 6 years in his mom’s basement doing nothing but collecting records and making beats. To this day, not only does he sustain himself 100% through music revenue, but he has elevated himself to a position where he can say, “No” to any inquiries of collaboration that do not inspire him. Essentially, he is literally doing what he wants. What makes him different is that he takes the time to dissect his process and give love back to those who don’t have the same knowledge as him through content like his YouTube series Blap:Cam. . . . . . All hail the Blap God. . .
Louise Attaque - Louise Attaque . . . . . .
Some short snippets from my morning drive to work today. I pass through a really beautiful area of Lake Champlain called Mallet’s Bay. We are blessed in Vermont to have a beautiful drive basically anywhere we go, a fact perpetuated by a law, that I actually support, outlawing billboard advertising and making them illegal in the entire state. I also want to showcase the music. It is an EP called Now That the Light Is Fading by Maryland/New York artist Maggie Rogers @maggierogers who quickly became one of my favorite artists after I first discovered her. She does a spiritual mix of EDM and folk and it has a super cool effect. Her first projects were void of the EDM element but you can still hear echoes of her earlier work in her present music. I first discovered her from a video that went viral where she shows a recording of this song to Pharrell Williams @pharrell after giving a brief explanation of how she first got into the mind state that led her to this new, innovative sound. The song is called “Alaska”. Enjoy the good vibes everyone! Let me know in the comments section if you were previously a fan of Maggie or if this post converted you to one! I got this CD at @purepopvt Pure Pop Records in Burlington, Vermont. .
I’m lucky to even have this on vinyl! John Denver’s Greatest Hits Found it at a garage sale of some guy in St. Albans, Vermont on my way home from work one day. This dude had a lot of albums and 45’s for sale and each album was $1. And although he had a lot of scratched records, he also had a ton that were in good shape. This was one of them, and I had seen it at stores, but always scratched. My parents had this on CD at the house growing up, so it was an album I was familiar with. My dad always describes John Denver as, “...music everybody likes, as he’s country but not too country, and you can hear a lot of other influences in his music as well.” I agree, so I decided to post a classic song, “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. Tell me your favorite song from this album and any stories you have with it in the comments section below! . . .
Classic record by Gang Starr, Moment of Truth. @djpremier I bought this at Sunrise Records in the Carrefour de l’Estrie in Sherbrooke, Québec. Features “Above The Clouds”, which is one of my favorite Premier beats, and this cut, “Betrayal”, featuring an ill, hard-hitting feature from Scarface. Gang Starr was a hip-hop group comprised of DJ Premier on the beats and Guru doing the vocals. Guru had a very characteristic monotone flow and Premier cut his vinyl samples and scratched in a way that was energetic yet in the pocket. Guru tragically was diagnosed with a rare disease and has since passed away, while DJ Premier continues to honor his legacy and still rock in his own way. Tell me about your favorite Preemo beats and Guru bars in the comments section! . .
Here’s two cool songs that I got as a 12” single over at @purepopvt Pure Pop Records in Burlington, Vermont the other week. It is produced by beat-maker extraordinaire RJD2. I have not heard much by rapper Aceyalone. I have heard of him, though, and although the songs on this record were new to me, the way I discovered him was a bit intriguing. When I was in high school, I had no vinyls. I had a large CD collection, which I still have and which is still expanding to this day; but most of my music was digital. I had an expansive collection of digital music, the majority of which was downloaded illegally (but I also made an effort to buy as much as I could, physical or through the iTunes Store). For me, the music comes first and then the rest of the logistics come second. Especially if something cannot even be found on YouTube and I don’t see it in stores, I would resort to searching up some torrents of it and hope that the quality was good and all the the sucks were there. I had many complete discographies of artists whom I both liked or barely knew. I also had the iPod with the biggest storage to accommodated this music, and quickly, even that didn’t have enough storage! So, when I first began getting into hip-hop, a few years in, I made the observation that while I noticed artists in other genres branching out in terms of time signatures and using non-4/4 signatures, especially in Latin American music, where 6/8 tends to be the norm, I saw that hip-hop was, and is, generally void of that experimentation. I’d venture a guess that something like 99% of hip-hop does not waver from 4/4, with an exception to Latin American hip-hop where that is more common, especially with a live band. After noticing this, I did a bit of personal research. I googled hip-hop that was not in 4/4, and honestly, really nothing came up! But with every search on the topic, I would find this dude’s name mentioned, Aceyalone. His ‘98 album The Book of Human Language is an album notes for experimentation with the typically rigid relationship hip-hop has with the 4/4 time signature (for any confused, that is the count and pulse you can feel or hear within most songs of “1-2-3-4”).
This album was sent to me from the good folks at Vinyl Me, Please @vinylmeplease and I was excited because this is an artist who I have heard features from and seen the name here and there over the years, but never really listened to his music. Open Mike Eagle’s debut album Unapologetic Art Rap is just what the title suggests, hip-hop that pushes boundaries for its time, both in terms of the sonic landscape and in dopeness. For all of the risks taken here on this album, Open Mike Eagle always keeps it dope and showcases his flows and how he can make the beats sound better with his voice. There are some cool conceptual songs, like this one in the video, which is about having a rap career but still being stuck with a day job that is there only to pay bills (who can relate!!). This album has catchy hooks, sly verses and even a “Sesame Street” sample at some point that all blend together for a very strong debut album. Vinyl is a very dope way to discover new music and sounds and I am happy that I was able to discover this artist in this way! Let me know in the comments if you are already a fan of this dude. I am now.
Here’s a record I bought in Middlebury, Vermont at the Vermont Book Store. It was the only vinyl on sale at the store and it wasn’t very expensive. I also bought the latest Buddy Guy @therealbuddyguy album “The Blues Is Alive And Well” on CD. I asked the cashier if the vinyl was by a local artist and she told me it was. But I still wasn’t sure if I was buying rock record or a country one. There is a bit of a country influence but it is for sure a rock record. So here is After The Flood by @lukereynoldsmusic Luke Reynolds. I don’t know too much about him other than what I heard while spinning the disc and from asking the cashier. I believe his family is from Middlebury but that he lives elsewhere. Maybe some of my Vermonter followers can help me fill in the information gaps. But the album was a rocker! I’m definitely a new fan now! Some of the songs were quite mellow and some of them had a bite to them. I love finding records in new towns I visit and I love discovering artists local to those areas. It opens my mind so much in ways that you could only otherwise receive from spending a lot of personal time with the locals of that area. Enjoy!
This record features Screamin’ Jay Hawkins with an orchestra. This song is the classic “I Put A Spell On You” and I got the record at Bull Moose @bullmoosestores in Bangor, Maine. . . Instagram told me that this video was blocked because it used copywrited material from “The Simpson’s”. Ok there...
The video is upside down! I thought I’d switch it up a little bit 😂😂🤣🙃🙃 but let the music speak for itself, as always. This is a classic record by Roberta Flack, called Roberta Flack Featuring Donny Hathaway. The album does feature Donny Hathaway if you were not able to figure that out, but only on 4 of the selections. The album is a follow up to a previous album that the two did as a duet completely. This album took a darker, more tragic turn, however, as Mr. Hathaway died before the recording sessions were finished, hence why he is not featured more. His name was left in the title so as to pay an appropriate tribute to his talents and contributions. You can even see that included on the inner album cover is a handwritten note paying homage to Donny Hathaway by Roberta, but it will likely be hard to read in the video. You’ll definitely have to pause it if you want to read it, but be aware that it was even hard for me to read in real life! But the sentiment is there, and that’s what counts most. Mrs. Flack does not disappoint with her vocal delivery, and the band is on point and in top form in true R&B/Soul fashion. I bought this record at @purepopvt Pure Pop in Burlington, Vermont. . . .
I am one of those people who views music as music, not as something that can be constantly compartmentalized and over-labeled to the point of mass discrimination. I want to hear it all and when something strikes my fancy, I’ll take it and run with it. As you continue to follow my feed, you’ll see that I enjoy music all across the sonic spectrum and that I make an effort to not dwell in just one or two corners of that spectrum. That has always been a goal of mine in my personal listening journey, and now I am doing my best to uphold that for you as I make my musical collection public. This is a polka record. I do have a familial connection to polka music, as my mother’s mother comes from a Ukrainian family and my mom has told me that those family members used to listen and dance to a lot of polka music! My only real experience with polka music personally is that I used to love the music of @alfredyankovic “Weird Al” Yankovic, as he does many polkas and polka medleys in addition to his popular parodies. This record is by another Yankovic, specifically the American polka star Frankie Yankovic. I did a little research and learned that the two are not related but that they were often musical collaborators. I picked this double record up for a dollar at @purepopvt or @estrieaidesherbrooke Estrie Aide in Sherbrooke. It is called 40 Hits I Almost Missed, and of you read through the track list, many of the songs have quite comedic titles. The track I chose to record is called “No Beer Today” and is obviously a very tragic, heartfelt ode to...missing beer. Frankie Yankovic might not be an artist you are aware of, but he played an important role in the continuation of Slovenian and Eastern European musical traditions. Check out this song and if you are already familiar with his music, let me know in the comments, as I would be interested to hear more about him!
The other day I had some time to kill before an appointment downtown and I decided to stop by @burlingtonrecords Burlington Records. Their selection is always great and I had been seeing some of the videos from their social media pages of new arrivals and I wanted to check out the store. I found some cool 7” 45rpm singles but also raided the $1 crate of 12” singles. I went searching for hip-hop 12” but I actually ended up getting a bunch of house music singles or EPs. This record is called “Sunshine” by Anthony Nicholson, and it features Charlotte Hunt. It is a nice song with a funky baseline and steady beat that does not get boring. House music was also a genre that I never listened to all that much, so getting these 12” singles was refreshing because I liked all of them and got to experience some deep, funky grooves for a reasonable price. Enjoy this excerpt and let’s hope for some sunshine today! 🌞🌞☀️☀️ Let me know your thoughts on the track in the comments!
I want to share another album that is both new to me and newly released. Cœur de pirate, otherwise known as Béatrice Martin, from the Outremont borough of Montréal, released the album “En cas de tempête, ce jardin sera fermé” in June 2018. The album is a continuation if the folky style of pop which has become her trademark sound. She has a powerful voice that she maintains a wonderful level of control over. The music behind her takes influence from hip-hop, pop and modern R&B as it does rock, folk and other more “traditional” québécois styles. I discovered her during my time living in Sherbrooke studying at Bishop’s University, as suddenly, when you cross the border in my homeland of Vermont, music popular in Québec and Canada as a whole is a bit harder to access. I would hear people playing her music often and I was always drawn to the sound of her voice, especially on some of her more minimalistic acoustic songs. Enjoy this selection and let me know what you think of today’s choices in the comments! I found this record at the Sherbrooke location of Archambault Music.
This album is called Am I Black Enough For You? and it’s by rapper Schoolly D. He is one of the first rappers from the 80’s, the first Golden Era of Hip-Hop, to really rap with more of a bite to his lyrics than most rappers, and is often credited with playing a part in the rise of “gangster rap.” Schoolly D raps his reality, and spits it how it is. This album tackles themes relevant to his life, and he raises awareness to the reality of what is it like to come from his hood and to be black in America in the 80’s. If only the same subjects were not still rapped about today...imagine that world. I bought this record at @purepopvt because I have been wanting to check out more hip-hop from that first Golden Era. Nowadays we often think of 90’s hip-hop as “old” and we often refer to that Golden Era. In reality, that is the second Golden Era of hip-hop, and the rappers from the 70’s and 80’s laid the foundation for the 90’s rappers. Maybe the flows got more intricate in the 90’s, but everything they did was in direct influence of those who came first.
This post’s album is a cool one. It is an instrumental hip-hop album called Rachel’s Suffering At The Hands Of The Sentinels by the artist Didaflo. I like to discover new artists/albums that I haven’t heard of before, taking “musical leap of faith” as one could put it, and this is one of them. YouTube @youtube and Bandcamp @bandcamp used to be my primary vehicles for random musical discoveries, but now vinyls have taken over a large part of my latest sonic experimentations. This was on sale on @fatbeats the Fat Beats website for $5 so I snatched it up, just knowing it was going to be cool because the cover art was all comics. The album was cool, it was vaguely reminiscent of @djshadow DJ Shadow’s 90’s masterpiece album Entroducing. Didaflo took a different approach, and made it more of a mash-up sort of style. The album itself was also very short. Didaflo was very precise about when he makes a transition from one sample to another. What was refreshing to me see was that a good portion of the samples were already familiar to me, either from knowing their original source or from having heard it used as a sample before, but here, they were all just another piece in the journey of string-together samples of either Side 1 or Side 2. Enjoy this clip!
One of the goals I have with amassing my vinyl collection is to collect music that I have never heard before. Of course I am always looking to hear unique sounds and interesting artists, but in the end, I really just enjoy musical discoveries. I have surprised myself this year by the affinity that I have for opera music. I’d say that there are about three reasons for this. I have been hearing opera music samples within hip-hop music for a long time, and I always thought it was a super dope effect. “Amerikkkan Pie” by Flatbush Zombies is one of my favorite examples of this. The two genres just blend so well! The next reason is watching the movie “Amadeus” which is about the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He wrote many operas about subjects not traditionally heard in opera music despite the amount of backlash he received. That movie served as a good blatant introduction to real opera music for me. The final factor is that I have listened closely to the opera records I have collected, some of which may span 4-5 discs or more for a single opera. It is almost like watching a movie, because operas are telling a story. The singers have immense talent because they also must play the part of actors upon a stage as well as flawlessly singing their musical parts along with it. The stories often touch upon emotional elements of the human condition and have relatable characters, even though they are often depicting royalty. This disc is a double disc that is kind of a “Best Of” for opera excerpts. It was just $1 from @purepopvt in Burlington, Vermont and both discs were in amazing condition! This music used to exist as the placeholder for what now is filled by movies, but close your eyes while you listen to this one minute excerpt and see if you can imagine what the stage set-up looked like, what movements the singers and actors are making, and especially if you’re like me and have limited experience with the music, just listen to the blend of voice and orchestra and enjoy!
Now here’s a nice record. I have a reissue version, but that definitely does not bring upon a negative connotation! Ray Charles is in his finest form on this recording, and as the title implies, this record strikes a jazz vein within him. Genius + Soul = Jazz is as accurate to its name as you would think. Ray swings as he floats upon the harmonic bed laid down underneath him from his all-star band. This track, “Birth of the Blues”, actually opens with an intro loosely reminiscent of the opening cadenza to Louis Armstrong’s early jazz piece “West End Blues” (if you don’t know it and you love jazz, look it up) and then Ray enters with some tasteful melodies. This man has always amazed me with his sheer talents and abilities, mixed in with with an infectious charisma that is evident through the strokes his fingertips make across the ivories. The most prominent image of Ray that I have in my mind is his explosive cameo in “The Blues Brothers.” This record comes from the Archambault location in Sherbrooke, Québec.
